Thoracic Back Pain

Physical Therapy for the Middle Back/Thoracic Area

If you have middle back pain, you are not alone. The upper and middle back, also known as the thoracic spine, contains twelve vertebrae that have discs, which separate each to absorb shock. Then this is surrounded by additional muscle and ligaments that all help hold the spine together. The shoulder girdle also sits on top of the rib cage, which is connected to the spine. Faulty movement in any of those structures can cause you some significant discomfort. All it takes is continuous poor posture to alter your spine in such a way to cause pain, but with the help of a physical therapist, we can get you back to prime spinal stability in no time.

The most common reason for back pain and shoulder stiffness is poor posture.

Causes of Middle Back Pain

Common causes of middle back pain include:

• Injury of your muscles, ligaments, or discs that make up your thoracic spine

• Pressure on your spinal nerves caused by herniated discs;

• A vertebrae fracture

• Osteoarthritis (the wearing down of cartilage which cushions your joints in your spine; and

• Connective tissue issues due to overuse or muscle deconditioning.

• Poor posture

How We Can Help You

If you come to us with middle back pain due to posture-related causes, we will work with you to mobilize and strengthen your spine. Once your muscles and joints are able to become mobile to correct your adverse positioning, we will begin to strengthen your thoracic posture.

Many times, the tightness in your muscles can restrict your spine joints from moving back to the proper position. The way we handle this is through a series of manual therapy, stretching, and mobility exercises that will restore your muscles and joints so we can properly position your spine.

Once we do that, we will then support you with establishing motor control. Remember, motor control is not the same as strength, because you cannot, unfortunately, strengthen your way out of poor posture.

We will actively get you back to correct spinal posture, help you see what proper posture looks and feels like, and give you the mindful tools to maintain that throughout the rest of your life. Overall, it is a slow, gradual process, and we work with you every step of the way, pushing you a little further each time until you are fully recovered.
