In the initial phase of each physical therapy session the patient and therapist review the recent progress has that been made, as well as today’s current state of the injury. During every appointment the physical therapist uses several modalities to facilitate healing through increasing blood flow, oxygenation, and decreasing swelling. Our therapists determination of individualized treatments are rooted in current research and clinical case studies.

Kinesio Taping miami fl

Kinesio Taping Method

The Kinesio Taping Method is a definitive rehabilitative taping technique that helps facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body's range of motion.

Kinesio Taping is applied specifically to the patient after evaluation to determine the necessary protocol. Based on the desired function, the amount of stretch, tension, and direction the kinesiotape is applied, as well as the shape the tape is cut, will help facilitate faster recovery time and extend the benefits of soft tissue manipulation and manual therapy administered in the clinical setting.

Kinesio Tape alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This effect forms convolutions in the skin, thus increasing interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in inflammation of the affected areas. Kinesio Tape can be applied in hundreds of ways and has the ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, reduce pain and inflammation, enhance performance, prevent injury, promote proper circulation and healing, and assist in returning the body to homeostasis.

Our therapists are trained in several taping techniques such as Kinesio taping (K-taping), Kinematic taping, and Mulligan taping. Based on the patient's present condition, the therapist can perform taping to assist with the following:

  • Mechanical corrections
  • Inhibition of muscle spasms
  • Reductions in swelling
  • Postural corrections
  • Increases in lymphatic drainage
  • Facilitation of inactive muscles

Following an in-depth evaluation by your Physical Therapist an individualized treatment program will be created which may include taping if appropriate and beneficial for your injury.

Therapeutic tape is composed of a latex free material with an acrylic adhesive, which is heat activated. Due to the tape’s fiber structure and arrangement it has a high potential to stretch, up to 140% of its original length, depending on the type and brand of the tape. This stretch can be manipulated by your therapist in terms of direction of pull, shape, and location to improve the intended effects. The purpose of the stretch is to allow for a pulling force on the skin after its application that can have a variety of benefits such as improvement in circulation, and stimulation of mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors. This stretching ability of the tape is one of the primary differentiating factors when comparing it to traditional athletic tape that has less ROM and can only be left on for a limited period of time due to its limited ability to stretch.

How does K-Taping work?

Kinesio Taping is applied specifically to the patient after evaluation to determine the necessary protocol. Based on the desired function, the amount of stretch, tension, and the direction that Kinesio Tape is applied, as well as the shape that the tape is cut, will help facilitate faster recovery time. It will also extend the benefits of both soft tissue manipulation and manual therapy administered in the clinical setting.
